Gear Scene About BD

Billy Poole has been living his dream. Skiing and filming in Argentina for much of the summer while the rest of us were suffering through triple-digit heat and our skis sat in storage. On top of that, while everyone else here at Black Diamond could only daydream about the still-in-development Megawatt powder ski, Billy got a pair of prototypes express-shipped to him for an exclusive test drive! Bastard!

We caught up with Billy upon his return to SLC and immediately started fishing for all of the juicy details of his trip. How were the snow conditions, how was hiking Adrenalina (the brutally exhausting 7,000-foot skin/boot pack near Las Leñas), and, of course, how did the Megawatts ski?

You were down in Las Leñas working on the Levitation Project. Who were you down there with? And what’s the Project all about?

I was down there with an awesome group of guys from The Levitation Project. The Levitation Project (TLP) is a Utah-based skiwear and production company. It is the brainchild of Nico Melendez, a rad snowboarder from Utah who decided to turn the ski and snowboard community upside-down. TLP recently put out its first flick with footy from Las Leñas. It is a cool company that puts skiers and snowboarders in the same movies, which in turn puts us together on the hill. It has been a great experience to have the opportunity to work with these boarders. They have such a different eye for the mountain. I love to hear their ideas on the hill. One of the wildest things in Las Leñas was working with Will Wissman and Adam Clark, two of the best action sports photographers, at the same time. Since we had a huge crew of skiers and snowboarders out there, we also had two crews of shooters for still and video. Some of these days Will and Adam would literally be shooting over each others shoulders. It was awesome to hear them talk shit and high-five every time they got great shots.

Where else has the Levitation Project filmed?

The Levitation has filmed mostly in Canada and Utah. The boarders did a cool trip to Denver year before last when they got buried. The Buddha has also been seen a lot around Washington State in places like Baker, Chrystal Mountain, and Snoqualmie. Last year was a tough year for snow in Utah. Levitation was hoping to film there a lot, so when the snow didn’t come, we were forced to pick up and head to where the snow was. We spent about two months in Canada a lot of time in Whistler and Revelstoke and all of the places in between. My favorite trip was through Baker to Whistler then far north on a heli-trip off of a yacht, then on to Banff, Alberta.

Was this your first time down to Las Leñas? How long were you down there for? How was the snow?

I have been to Las Leñas two other times previous to this trip. Both times there was a larger snow base. Sometimes that can be a curse down there though. With their normal base, every time it snows, the entire mountain is shut down so you don’t get to ski the goods. This year, there was such a low base when we got there, but it snowed about two feet our first night and we got to ski it from the top the next day which is quite a treat in Las Leñas. I ended up staying in Las Leñas for a full month and 4 storms rolled through during that time full of light powder. We managed to film a ton of days with blue bird and pow. I definitely got the best conditions I have ever had down there!

What was best part of the whole trip?

The best part of the trip was vino tinto and red meat with 12 of my best friends.

And the worst?

Getting halfway up the 7,000-foot Adrenalina couloir and having my hangover wear off.

Are you sticking around here for the ski season or are you hitting the road?

I really want to stick around Utah for the winter if we get snow. The Wasatch is my favorite place to be; shredding deep pow with my friends. But if the snow doesn’t come, I will definitely hit the road… or air.

We heard you scored a pair of Megawatt prototypes to test. Somebody over in our R&D department must love you—those skis aren't coming out until Fall 2008! Ok, we gotta know: How sick are the Megawatts?

The Megawatts are unbelievable. They are the most fun ski I have ever skied in powder. They have the ability to surf and carve at the same time. Thomas [Laakso, BD's Ski Line Category Director] is really on to something with these skis. My first day on them down there was the last pow day of the summer. We shot some pow turns, then hit this 25-foot cliff a few times; they killed it! After that, the wind came and blew all the snow away leaving hard, wind packed snow that would warm and soften up later in the day. I took out the Megawatts to see how they handled on hard pack. I was floored on the first run; they were amazing! They actually carved on the hard pack and didn’t wash out at all. The Megawatts get my full approval. They even made it through a couple laps in the park.
