About Mugs Award Winners How to Apply

1996 Mugs Stump Award Winners:

Gregory Collum, Greg Child, Chuck Boyd, and Greg Foweraker, will attempt the Southeast Face of Shipton Spire in the Karakoram Himalaya of Pakistan. Collum and Boyd tried a different route on this virgin rock spire in 1992, turning back just below the summit in bad weather after 36 pitches of climbing.

Mark Synnott, Warren Hollinger, and Jeff Chapman will attempt the 4500-foot North Face of Polar Sun Spire in the remote eastern fjords of Baffin Island in northern Canada. After this climb, the trio plans to make a ski traverse from Walker Arm to Gibbs Fjord, an area that has probably not been visited by non-native people before.

Gary Ryan, Pat Adams, and Tyler Young will attempt a free ascent of the 1963 McCarthy/Robbins/Kor/McCracken route on the Southeast Face of Mount Proboscis in the Northwest Territories of Canada. The trio’s goal is to push the limits of traditional free climbing on this remote big wall by free climbing the original aid route with minimal fixed gear and no fixed ropes.

Minot Maser and Charlie Wolf will attempt the first ascent of Mount Miller, via the 4500-foot Northwest Ridge. At 8875 feet, Mount Miller is the highest unclimbed peak in Alaska’s Wrangell/Saint Elias Park.

Will Hair and Jose Pereyra will attempt a free ascent of the Japanese Route on Auyen Tepui, a 3000-foot sandstone wall near Angel Falls in Southern Venezuela. Pereyra, who has aided the route, says it could be the South American equivalent of free-climbing The Nose or Salathe Wall on El Capitan.
