A
compact two-person, four-season tent built for weight-conscious
climbers, the Firstlight is based on the I-Tent’s
expedition-specific design with steep walls and a
simple floor shape to optimize living space and increase
headroom. For durability, all seams are double sewn
and the stress points are reinforced. With two equal
length DAC Featherlite poles that fit inside the
tent with hook-and-loop wraps, it’s easy to
set up—even from inside. For cross ventilation,
both the small rear window and the door are covered
with no-see-um mesh. The canopy is contructed with
water resistant, breathable Epic fabric. For interior
organization, the Firstlight has two interior net
pockets.

Details |
| EPIC
Fabric by Nextec |
| EPIC
by Nextec® is constructed by silicon-encapsulating
individual fibers, making it breathable and
extremely lightweight. EPIC offers better
protection than DWR-treated fabrics that
wash out over time and is more breathable
than PU coatings or PTFE laminates including
Gore-Tex, Conduit SL and Pertex®. EPIC
is excellent for use in tents when heavy
condensation is an issue and during rain
and snow showers. |
| SilNylon
Fabric |
| SilNylon
is a silicone-coated ripstop nylon that is
twice as strong as high quality polyurethane-coated
ripstop nylon. At two-thirds the weight of
PU-coated ripstop, SilNylon offers excellent
strength-to-weight ratio. SilNylon is waterproof,
resilient in its durability and is very resistant
to degradation over time. |
| DAC
Poles |
| DAC
Featherlite tent poles are used in our Superlight
Series and work to inherently improve a tent’s
strength-to-weight ratio while providing
the least chance of breakage because there
are no glued inserts. Their sleeved and structurally
sound connecting pole sections eliminate
their weakest link, glued pole inserts, reducing
weight by 15 % over other commonly-used aluminum
poles. |

Testimonials
"OK. I was wrong. I admit it. I thought the FirstLight
would be great for the kids in the backyard, but not
for serious use by heroes. Wrong. Margie and I
took the tent on a rim-to-river trip in the Grand Canyon
in record setting high temperatures. We enjoyed an afternoon-long
thunderstorm featuring high winds and driving rain.
I watched the storm from the tent while studying
the excellent sewing near the ceiling. (Margie
said I was napping.) Not a leak! Overnight, there was
not a drop of condensation. The kids' single wall tent
(from a competitor) got wet from the rain and the overnight
condensation was terrible—it literally rained
inside that tent."
"I was impressed. There is plenty of room in the
tent for two, and the light color makes it very
livable. The eyebrow awnings worked well—they
let us keep the door partly open during the storm and
stay nicely ventilated. The fabric is quite soft, so
wind noise is greatly reduced and not a factor. There
was none of the snap and crackle that has kept me awake
in coated, stiff tents. The Velcro tubes are
better for securing the poles than the twist clips
in my E tent. There are plenty of storage pockets.
It's a great piece of gear."
—Julian
"I
have used allot of equipment in my time as a soldier
in special operations, a climbing guide and now as
an adventure racer. One of the
best pieces of equipment I have ever used is the
BD First Light tent. I picked it because it is very
light (the weight of a bivy sack) but it is
strong. It is so strong I used it last year in the
Iditasport Trail
Invitational in Alaska (a human powered race which
starts four days
before the Iditarod on the same trail in February).
When it the snow
dumped and I was too tired to go on, I climbed inside
my FL and was it
kept me dry and twenty degrees warmer than the outside.
I have used the
tent on Mt Whitney and in Yosemite in the winter
but I don't know of a
harsher environment than Alaska in winter. The FL
is my 2.5 pound
insurance policy and my security blanket.
Thanks BD."
—Jon
"Dear
BD, Just
finished five days on the PCT and really liked
my new Firstlight tent. Well thought out, small
enough foot print that it made easier to find a
level campsite, nice interior space for one or
two in a pinch. Nice going!"
—Bruce
"Hello, we took the lightweight Mega Mid and Firstlight with us to the Ruth
Gorge (along with much older BD gear) in April this year. Thanks for making
the lighter weight version of the Mega Mid. It served us well as a cook tent.
We used the Firstlight as our 'route tent' on Peak 11,300 on the West Fork of
the Ruth. It did well all three nights we used it (during two attempts). We had
frozen condensate on the inside but I expected that during the cold nights. To
have such a packable, lightweight tent, I see no reason to ever take a bivy
sack (unless the route didn't allow a tent). I had a rock under my head
at one bivy and the material held up. Thanks for making this little gem!
I just thought I would let you know how your gear did in the hands of the average
joe. Didn't get a chance to attempt our original goal, the Harvard Route on Huntington,
but have plans to head in next season for a go. Cheers."
—John Fitzgerald
